Historic Victory for Domestic Workers in New York

USA -- New York State is the first of the United States to pass legislation extending legal protections and employment benefits to domestic workers.  Both the New York Senate and Assembly have passed laws extending overtime, paid leave and termination notice rights to domestic workers.  Justice for domestic workers led the agenda at the recent U.S. Social Forum in Detroit.  Read more at the truthout website about how the National Domestic Worker Alliance is teaching activists around the country to secure protection for household workers.  New York's domestic worker struggle has been covered in the New York Times (click here), featuring nannies who for the first time are eligible for basic work protections that most U.S. employees take for granted.  New York Magazine (click here) also highlighted the Domestic Workers United successful campaign.  In the midst of the legislative battle, a New York Times editorial supported the bill, and even the Business and Labor Coalition of New York urged its passage (read BALCONY statement here).
